Product branding and private label packaging

Section 5: Sources by Business Model

In this post: what private label and white label are, Alibaba OEM sourcing, MOQ requirements, branding costs, and honest guidance on whether to start here or start elsewhere first.

Private Label vs White Label — What's the Difference?

These terms are often used interchangeably but they're subtly different:

White Label: You take a generic, already-manufactured product and put your brand name on it. The product design is identical to what the factory sells to dozens of other retailers. You just change the label. Example: a generic USB-C charging cable sold under your "TechFlow" brand.

Private Label: You work with a manufacturer to create (or modify) a product specifically for your brand. You might choose the material, color, shape, or features. The product is customized and exclusive to you. Example: a yoga mat in a specific color with your logo embossed, made to your thickness specification.

For eBay beginners, white label is far more accessible — it requires less capital, less design work, and less risk. True private label is a larger commitment better suited to established sellers.

Why Private Label Can Be Powerful on eBay

When you resell someone else's branded product (Sony, Nike, Apple), eBay places you in a sea of competitors all selling the exact same thing. The only differentiator is price — and in a price war, the biggest seller with the most reviews always wins.

Private label changes this completely. You own your brand. There are no other eBay listings for "TechFlow USB-C Cable 3m Fast Charge" — only yours. You control the price. You differentiate on features and presentation. You build real brand equity over time.

Alibaba OEM Sourcing — The Main Private Label Route

Alibaba is where most eBay private label sellers source their products. OEM stands for Original Equipment Manufacturer — you're using their manufacturing capabilities to produce your branded products.

Step 1: Find Your Product Idea

Before going to Alibaba, validate your product idea using the methods we've covered in this series:

  • Check eBay sold listings — does this category sell well?
  • Use ZIK Analytics or Terapeak — what's the Sell-Through Rate and average selling price?
  • Check if there are top sellers without an obvious brand dominating the category — this is your opening

Step 2: Search Alibaba for OEM Suppliers

On Alibaba.com, search for your product and filter for "OEM" or "Custom" capabilities. Message suppliers asking:

  1. "Do you offer OEM/private label with custom packaging?"
  2. "What is your minimum order quantity (MOQ)?"
  3. "Can you provide samples before bulk order?"
  4. "What is your lead time for [X units]?"
  5. "Do you have any existing clients in the US/UK market?" (signals export experience)

Step 3: Understand MOQ (Minimum Order Quantity)

MOQ is the minimum number of units a supplier will manufacture for you. This is the biggest barrier for beginners. Here's what to expect:

  • White label (logo on existing product): MOQ typically 50–200 units
  • Custom packaging only: MOQ 100–500 units
  • Fully custom product (material, shape, size): MOQ 500–5,000 units

How to negotiate lower MOQs:

  • Start with a sample order first — pay for 5–10 units to test quality
  • Tell them "I'm a new brand starting small but planning to scale" — most factories prefer growing relationships over one-time large orders
  • Offer to pay a higher per-unit price in exchange for a lower MOQ
  • Find suppliers who specialize in small brands — filter Alibaba for "small MOQ" or "no MOQ"

Branding and Packaging Basics

Your brand is more than a name — it's the complete experience of receiving and using your product. Here's what you need to create a professional private label brand:

Brand Name

  • Short, memorable, and easy to pronounce
  • Not infringing on existing trademarks (check USPTO.gov for US, IPO.gov.uk for UK)
  • Works well across different product lines (don't name yourself "TechFlow" if you plan to expand to kitchenware)
  • Use Canva (free) or hire a Fiverr designer ($5–$30) for a simple logo
  • Request vector format (.AI or .SVG) from your designer — factories need this for printing
  • Keep it simple — a complex logo doesn't print well on small product labels

Packaging

  • Poly bags: Cheapest option — clear plastic bag with your branded sticker. Cost: $0.10–$0.30/unit
  • Printed boxes: Professional retail-style box with your logo printed directly. Cost: $0.30–$1.50/unit depending on quantity and complexity
  • Insert cards: Small card inside the package with your brand's story, care instructions, and a QR code to your eBay store. Builds trust and encourages repeat buyers

eBay-Specific Private Label Strategy

Private label on eBay works differently than on Amazon. Here's what you need to know:

  • No gated categories for your own brand: On Amazon, getting your own brand registered requires Amazon Brand Registry. On eBay, you can list your branded product immediately with no approval process
  • Build your brand through your eBay store: Create an eBay store (Basic Store: $4.95/month) with your brand name. All listings under one storefront builds recognition
  • Keyword your brand into the title: "TechFlow USB-C Cable 6FT Fast Charging Nylon Braided For iPhone Samsung" — your brand name + descriptive keywords
  • Use all 12 eBay listing photos: Branded packaging, product shots, lifestyle images, close-up details. Private label succeeds through superior presentation

Thinking About Private Label? Start with the Right Account

A US LLC or UK LTD account removes selling limits faster and looks more professional for a branded business.

Is Private Label Right for Beginners?

Honest answer: not as your first model. Here's why:

  • You need $500–$2,000 minimum capital for even a small white label order
  • You're taking inventory risk — if the product doesn't sell, your money is tied up
  • Building a brand takes time — you won't see results for 2–3 months minimum
  • You need to understand eBay's algorithm and selling patterns BEFORE you invest in inventory

Recommended path:

  1. Start: Dropshipping from AliExpress/CJ to learn what sells
  2. Test: Use retail arbitrage to learn eBay's listing and fulfillment process
  3. Scale: Once you've found a category that consistently sells well, move to wholesale
  4. Build: Once you understand demand, THEN invest in private label for that category

Private label is the highest-margin, highest-potential model on eBay — but it rewards experience and capital, not beginners making their first sale.

🎯 Action Steps

  1. Identify 1 product niche where you already have some knowledge or interest
  2. Search eBay sold listings — how many branded vs unbranded products are in this niche?
  3. Search Alibaba for "[product] OEM" — check supplier MOQs and sample prices
  4. Design a simple brand name (brainstorm 10 options, check availability on USPTO.gov)
  5. Calculate full startup cost including product, packaging, shipping, and eBay listing photos

Key Takeaways

  • White label = your brand on existing generic product; Private label = custom-designed product for your brand
  • Alibaba is the main OEM sourcing platform — filter for Verified Suppliers with OEM capability
  • Minimum startup capital: $500–$2,000 for white label; $2,000–$10,000 for true private label
  • Beginners should start with dropshipping or RA to learn the market before investing in private label
  • eBay private label advantages over Amazon: no Brand Registry needed, list immediately under any brand name
