📍 You are here: Part 45 of 50+ — eBay Product Research: Complete Masterclass
In this guide you will learn: Claude's strengths vs ChatGPT · How to use Claude for competitor store analysis · Prompt templates for research synthesis
What Makes Claude Different
Claude, built by Anthropic, has two distinct advantages over ChatGPT for research-heavy work:
- Longer context window: Claude can process much larger inputs — you can paste an entire competitor's store description, a full CSV of 500 products, or 20 listing titles at once. ChatGPT's context is shorter and it starts forgetting earlier content in a long conversation.
- More careful instruction-following: Claude is trained to follow complex, multi-part instructions more accurately. When you give it a detailed prompt with 8 criteria to evaluate, it is less likely to skip steps.
For eBay product research, this matters most when you are doing synthesis work — taking a large amount of real data and asking for a structured summary.
When to Use Claude vs ChatGPT
Claude vs ChatGPT — Quick Comparison
Use Claude When:
- Pasting a full competitor store page (long text)
- Analyzing a 200-row research spreadsheet
- Following a complex multi-step research workflow
- Writing a long, structured client report
- Processing 20+ listing titles simultaneously
Use ChatGPT When:
- Quick niche brainstorming (fast replies)
- Short keyword list generation
- Simple Q&A about eBay concepts
- Generating listing titles quickly
- You need web browsing (GPT-4o with Bing)
Prompt Template 1: Competitor Store Analysis
Process:
- Go to a competitor's eBay store on your browser
- Select all the product titles on their main store page (Ctrl+A if you are on their store page, or manually copy 20–30 titles)
- Paste into Claude with this prompt:
"Here are the product titles from a competitor's eBay store. Analyze them for: (1) Which categories are they targeting? (2) What price ranges do the titles suggest? (3) What keywords appear most frequently — these reveal their SEO strategy. (4) Identify any patterns in how they write titles (format, keyword placement). (5) What product gaps do you notice — items I could add that complement their catalog? [PASTE 20-30 TITLES]"
Prompt Template 2: Research Spreadsheet Analysis
After you have run Terapeak or ZIK research and built a spreadsheet, paste the data into Claude for instant analysis.
"Below is raw product research data from my eBay analysis. Each row is a product with these columns: Product Name, Monthly Sold, Active Listings, Average Selling Price, My Source Price (Walmart), and Estimated Profit Margin. Analyze this data and: (1) Rank all products from strongest to weakest opportunity using the PASS framework (minimum 15 sold/month, under 300 active listings, $15–$80 price, 30%+ margin). (2) Mark each as PASS, FAIL, or BORDERLINE. (3) Write a brief one-sentence reason for each verdict. (4) Recommend the top 3 products I should prioritize. [PASTE YOUR DATA]"
UK LTD and USA LLC eBay accounts with Managed Payments. Professional setup for Pakistani sellers.
Prompt Template 3: Product Listing Copy
After you confirm a product is viable (real data says it sells), Claude is excellent at writing the full listing description.
"Write an eBay product description for: [PRODUCT NAME AND SPECS]. The buyer is typically: [describe buyer persona]. Key selling points: [list 5 features]. eBay allows HTML — use <ul> for features, <p> for paragraphs, and <strong> for emphasis. Target length: 150–200 words. Include: what it is, who it is for, top 5 benefits as bullet points, and one line about returns/condition. Do NOT use fake urgency phrases like 'limited time' or 'buy now'."
Claude Limitations
Like ChatGPT, Claude cannot access live eBay data. It also:
- Cannot browse the web unless you are using Claude.ai with web search enabled
- Will sometimes produce confident-sounding but incorrect statistics — always verify numbers against real sources
- Does not know your specific profit margins or supplier prices unless you tell it
Key Takeaways
- Claude's strength is long-context analysis — use it when pasting large amounts of data
- It follows complex multi-part instructions more reliably than ChatGPT for research tasks
- Use it to analyze spreadsheets, competitor stores, and to write client reports and listing copy
- Always feed it real data — never ask it to invent market statistics
Action Step
Take your best product research spreadsheet from a previous ZIK or Terapeak session. Paste it into Claude with Prompt Template 2 above. See if Claude's PASS/FAIL verdicts match what you decided manually. Note any differences.
